Riggs Flat Lake, high atop Mt. Graham southwest of Safford, is one of the area's most important trout fisheries. It also boasts incredible scenery and the endangered Mt. Graham red squirrels that environmentalists and scientists continue to argue over. Don't expect to see many of the squirrels near the lake though. They prefer solitude.

You can pretty much expect the gates to the lake to close around late October. On the average summer, expect the stocking truck to arrive about seven times

  • To get to the lake from Phoenix, take U.S. 60 and then U.S. 70 east to Safford. In Safford, take U.S. Route 191 south for 9 miles to the entrance of the Coronado National Forest. Turn right and you will be on State Route 366. The road is paved for the first 21 miles up the mountain and then you will be on a graded dirt road for 12.9 miles. The lake is quite a few cliffy miles up the mountainous road, so take your time, and savor the views.
