The lake level is currently 643 feet above msl. The fishing dock at Katherine’s Landing can produced some nice fish. The striper bite has returned according to reports. Down deep by the dam and above the power lines are reported as the hottest spots. Lures that mimic trout are working for stripers as well as the old tried and true anchovies. Submersible lights fished during the new moon are an effective way to catch stripers. Check the moon phases before you go – the last new moon was January 27th. The next new moon will be February 26th. Cut anchovies usually work the best for stripers at night.

Biologists from both Arizona Game and Fish Department and Nevada Division of Wildlife with the help of volunteers, National Park Service, and Bureau of Reclamation personnel have continued to install fish habitat in Carp Cove, Box Cove, Shoshone, Princess and Arrowhead. Prospect Cove (1st cove south of Princess Launch Ramp) is the latest addition on the Arizona side of the lake to get habitat deployed. Fish habitat consists of PVC structures, tamarisk bundles and a new type of habitat we call poly shrubs. The largemouth, smallmouth, bluegill and catfish are really utilizing the new structures. Additional habitat will be added at several locations over the next two years. These structures are fish magnets.

Striper fishing has slowed, but by the dam shore fishing is producing some nice fish. Anchovies are the bait of choice for these fish.

Important notice: With the discovery of invasive quagga mussels in Mead, Mohave and Havasu, proper cleaning of all watercraft is critical to help prevent the spread of these invaders. Please drain and dry your livewell and bilge on land. Drain all the water you can from your engine. Also, inspect your vessel and trailer, removing any visible mussels, but also feel for any rough or gritty spots on the hull. These may be young mussels that can be hard to see.

Fishing is still a tad slow along the Colorado River but it is picking up as the weather continues to improve.
“Lake Mohave is having some fair fishing going on near Davis Dam,” said Rusty Braun, proprietor of Riviera Marina in Bullhead City and provider of area fishing news for the Mohave Valley Daily News, the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Nevada Department of Wildlife. “You have a chance at some striper action.

“Boat or shore, the points are the spots working best.”
A pair of anglers, Mike Ramsey and Ron Belton, landed a couple of stripers — 5.2 and 6.2 pounds respectively.
“Both are nice-sized fish — these guys will peel off some line,” Braun said.

Braun added that the smallmouth bass are being found “along the shelves” while the largemouth bass are “back in the coves.”
“It’s a little bit early yet,” he said of the bass fishing, “and anchovies are a good bet.”
The fishing below the dam is primarily rainbow trout.

“The rainbow trout are being stocked by the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery and were provided by our state Game and Fish Department and raised by the federal wildlife department for our local and visiting anglers to catch. We just got one of our monthly stockings at Davis Camp and Bullhead Community Park last Thursday.
“The rainbows seem to hold for a few days at these locations. Spinners and bait are all working around this time. After a bit, you will need to try your favorite bait and might switch if that slows or is not producing fish.”
The moratorium on stocking at Rotary Park is still in effect.

“The Rotary Park site is still on hold due to the chance they might eat the (protected) razorback sucker larvae. I am trying to get more information on how this decision was made and I will try to get an update.”
If you are having any success catching fish, let Braun know so he can share the information with others — both local readers and those in the region who follow the fishing conditions.

Black bass action has been sluggish, but anglers have found some success for striped bass. Cut anchovies and swimbaits have been catching the fish between Davis Dam and the power lines.
