  • Lake Mohave was created in 1951 following the construction of Davis Dam on the Colorado River southeast of Las Vegas.
    The upper 20 miles of the reservoir lies within Black Canyon and is cold all year from Hoover Dam’s deep-water releases. The remainder of the reservoir is seasonally warm and more open with the widest section in Cottonwood Basin (4 miles). There are three marinas with launch ramps, two in Arizona (Willow Beach and Katherine’s Landing) and one in Nevada (Cottonwood Cove). There is a launch ramp at Princess Cove in the Arizona near Katherine’s landing. Developed camping is available at Cottonwood Cove and Katherine’s Landing. Shoreline camping is permitted and campers should carry out their trash and provide for adequate sanitation. Bring plenty of drinking water since summer temperatures can exceed 110 degrees F.

  • Game fish include striped bass, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, bluegill sunfish, crappie, and channel catfish. Nongame fish include carp, razorback sucker, bonytail chub, red shiner, and threadfin shad. The best time of year to fish for striped bass is April through November with the peak in October. For largemouth bass, March through June is generally best and for rainbow trout anytime they are stocked (November through March). Generally, the most productive fishing for striped bass occurs when sunlight is low or at night. During these times, use cut bait or lures as fish move into shallow water to feed. Daytime fishing requires trolling or still fishing 40 to 100 feet deep with cut bait or lures that imitate trout or shad. Plastic worms, live worms, and various crankbaits work best for largemouth bass during the spawning season. For trout, Power Bait and small spinners work best within 3 to 4 days of a plant. Two state records have come from Lake Mohave; a 63 lb striped bass was caught in 2001 and a 16 lb 4 oz rainbow trout was caught in 1971 (although recently beaten in February 2011 with a 16 lb 8 oz from Ruby Lake). Other water records include a 30 lb 8 oz carp, an 11 lb largemouth bass, a 26 lb 4 oz channel catfish, a 2 lb 12 oz black crappie, a 1 lb 1 oz bluegill sunfish, and an 11 lb 6 oz cutthroat trout.
  • Travel east out of Las Vegas for approximately 20 miles on Highway 515, 93, or 95 towards Boulder City, turning south on 95 to Searchlight. You will reach Searchlight in 40 miles. From here, turn east and travel approximately 13 miles to Cottonwood Cove at Lake Mohave. To reach Willow Beach, stay on Highway 93 from Las Vegas through Boulder City. Crossover into Arizona via the Hover Dam Bypass and in another 12 miles, you will reach the turnoff to Willow Beach.

    The lake level is currently 643 feet above msl. The fishing dock at Katherine’s Landing can produced some nice fish. The striper bite has returned according to reports. Down deep by the dam and above the power lines are reported as the hottest spots. Lures that mimic trout are working for stripers as well as the old tried and true anchovies. Submersible lights fished during the new moon are an effective way to catch stripers. Check the moon phases before you go – the last new moon was January 27th. The next new moon will be February 26th. Cut anchovies usually work the best for stripers at night.

    Biologists from both Arizona Game and Fish Department and Nevada Division of Wildlife with the help of volunteers, National Park Service, and Bureau of Reclamation personnel have continued to install fish habitat in Carp Cove, Box Cove, Shoshone, Princess and Arrowhead. Prospect Cove (1st cove south of Princess Launch Ramp) is the latest addition on the Arizona side of the lake to get habitat deployed. Fish habitat consists of PVC structures, tamarisk bundles and a new type of habitat we call poly shrubs. The largemouth, smallmouth, bluegill and catfish are really utilizing the new structures. Additional habitat will be added at several locations over the next two years. These structures are fish magnets.

    Striper fishing has slowed, but by the dam shore fishing is producing some nice fish. Anchovies are the bait of choice for these fish.

    Important notice: With the discovery of invasive quagga mussels in Mead, Mohave and Havasu, proper cleaning of all watercraft is critical to help prevent the spread of these invaders. Please drain and dry your livewell and bilge on land. Drain all the water you can from your engine. Also, inspect your vessel and trailer, removing any visible mussels, but also feel for any rough or gritty spots on the hull. These may be young mussels that can be hard to see.

    "The striper action is holding steady at Lake Mohave but fishing elsewhere is a tad on the slow side.

    That’s the news from Rusty Braun, proprietor of Riviera Marina in Bullhead City and provider of the area fishing report for the Mohave Valley Daily News, the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

    “Near the dam has been doing OK (for stripers), from shore or boat,” Braun said. “I have heard that the largemouth bite has been picking up in the coves while the striped bass are down deep, with anchovies working the best so far.”

    Braun noted that visiting Tucson anglers Ryan Koup and Joey Perez harvested four nice stripers, in the 4- to 6-pound range and brought them by the marina to be measured and photographed.

    Les Kern, a visiting fisherman from California, didn’t head to the marina but did get a picture of his striper caught from the shore at Lake Mohave before releasing the fish back into the lake.

    While the news on stripers from the lake was positive, the news on other fish in other locations was neutral at best."
